ASCII Code Set


ASCII, stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange and is a standard seven-bit code that was proposed by ANSI in 1963, and finalized in 1968. The code represents English characters as numbers. ASCII was established to achieve compatibility between various types of data processing equipment and is now used as the common code for microcomputer equipment. The standard ASCII character set consists of 128 decimal numbers ranging from zero through 127 assigned to letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and the most common special characters. The Extended ASCII Character Set also consists of 128 decimal numbers and ranges from 128 through 255 representing additional special, mathematical, graphic, and foreign characters. Most of the 255 characters make up the keys found on any keyboard.

You can be sure if your typing any number or letter of the English alphabet (symbols 32 -126) in to your html document, that it will appear in any browser just as you anticipated it would. However to have the symbols numbered 127-291 such as the “ ” and < > you must use the ascii codes listed below. To have the less than and greater than symbols ( the characters used to create HTML tags ) to actually appear on HTML, use their ascii values, '&#60;' or the name codes '&lt;' without the quotes. Try using other numbers and see what sort of symbols you can find. Be sure to check the rendering in both Internet Explorer and Netscape. Internet Explorer supports over 65,000 symbols.
